Mood: in_loveListening To: his & hers There's a time and place for everything ... *steps on soap box* My all-time favorite movie is Cinema Paradiso and even though I may be biased I think this is one of the best films ever made. Yes, better than The Matrix trilogy, better than The Godfather, certainly better than that horrible drivel that is the The Lord Of The Rings trilogy or the current #1 in IMDB's Top 250, The Dark Knight. Maybe the only movie that is better, in my not so umble opinion is Schindler's List. That being said, recently we bought Shoot 'Em Up on DVD and needless to say that this movie doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Cinema Paradiso, but this is still an enjoyable movie just as long as you understand from the beginning that the premise of this movie is to be over-the-top and that it is pure entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. That's why I have to snicker and feel pity for people who leave comments like "the bizarre contrived sentimentality the filmakers tried to force into the movie " on a masterpiece like the first-mentioned movie. Or people that say that "Not one single moment of this movie rang true for me. Subtlety was passed over on every occasion for the the most manipulative of cinematic tricks, and the love story that anchors the film is boring and completely missing any sort of sexual spark." People like this have no clue, they have attention spans that are threatened by fruit flies, they have the brain capacity of a sheep, they have ... well, you caught my drift Maybe this Italian commenter says it best: "I seldom watch Italian movies, (i saw it today for the first time) being Italian maybe i'm biased, but this one really stands out. A real masterpiece; i can't remember another movie so moving like this one, maybe Schindler's List; it makes you laugh and it makes you cry, yet it is so simple and straightforward. Maybe there lies its magic: no Hollywood superstars, no special effects, just pure emotions and feelings, love, fear, grief and regret, nostalgia for childhood and youth, memories of places and times that will not come back, memories of the loved ones. Some movies are there to entertain, some to scare, some to question. This movie is there to affect your feelings." Indeed, this movie is about nostalgia, love, friendship, passion and it doesn't matter that the storyline is thin, that the acting is only mediocre, that the editing is sloppy, that the voice-overs are sloppy, it is all about feelings and respect and true love for films. And yes, every time I watch the movie (max once a year) I cry at the end and fuck you if you think that is weak; I say that if you are left cold by it, you don't have a heart. *steps off soap box* Anyway, you may or may have not noticed that I have started the next instalment of the Around the US series. Next to the first two I submitted there's going to be 20 more ... after that, who knows?! Ciao ragazzi! Rene Read More Poll Question:
